Prior studies show that regular tobacco use among persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) is associated with reduced quality of life, higher rates of AIDS defining illnesses, faster progression to AIDS, and increased risk of mortality. The specific aim of the study is to conduct qualitative research to understand the dynamics of tobacco use among PLWHA within a well-established framework of health behavior change (i.e., The Theory of Planned Behavior). Thirty PLWHA who use tobacco will be recruited to participate in a 30-60 minute telephone interview about their use and motivation for tobacco use. The results will be analyzed to improve the health and quality of life of PLWHA by reducing or preventing tobacco use.
